On November 5, 2024, the first United University Hub (UNU) in the United States and the world’s first UNU hub uniquely focussed on the use of remote sensing and innovative technologies to work towards the sustainability of urban environments was launched at the City College of the City University of New York. Grove School of Engineering (GSOE) Dean Alexander Couzis and CREST Executive Director, Dr. Reza Khanbilvardi will serve as the executive co-directors of the UNU Hub at CCNY—R-SIRUS.
R-SIRUS’s main office will be at the GSOE and the Division of Interdisciplinary Studies at the Center for Worker Education will house a satellite office to maximize reach to working professionals, in addition to researchers and students.

During the inauguration ceremony, Prof. Tshilidzi Marwala, the Rector of the UNU and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and CCNY President Vince Boudreau signed the official Memorandum of Understanding in the Steinman Hall, CCNY in the presence of esteemed guests including CCNY & CREST leadership, Director of the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH) & CREST’s Environmental Justice & Social Science Co-Director, Dr. Kaveh Madani, Ambassador Bob Rae, Permanent Representative of Canada to the UN in New York and the President of ECOSOC, students, faculty, and other professionals.
Focussing on Remote-Sensing and Sustainable Innovations for Resilient Urban Systems (R-SIRUS), through this partnership, CCNY and UNU aim to engage in innovative research, training, and policy developments that focus on providing practical solutions to the growing problems of urban cities and regions, including coastal cities, under climate and Anthropogenic changes.
